Letter No. 6

Thursday
Jan. 11, 1945
New Guinea

Dear Mom:

Just a few lines to say that I am still o.k. Today is Virginia's birthday and as I thought of her, I wondered if I will ever see her again. Everything back home seems far away now. I find that most of us feel that way.

I got a couple of Jap coins today but know how to send any to you. There is not much around here that would interest anybody back there. It doesn't pay to be a souvenir hunter in the Army.

The weather today is very hot. I am already very dark brown. Yesterday I got your air mail letter dated Dec 25. Thanks for the news. Also got a letter from Freda dated December 21. The air mail is the fasted mail system here. Sorry I can't get much to write to you with. I was glad to hear you all had a nice Xmas. Especially about Dad.

I would like to have some stationary - any kind. But packages are so slow over here, I don't know when I will get it. Hope you can send a box of eats soon.

The other day I helped work the mail, and I really learned some of the difficulty connected with getting packages overseas. I am lucky because it hasn't been so long since I was in the States.

I hope everybody is ok. Please say hello to Glenn and Linton and the rest. I haven't done much writing to them. I hope they are doing ok. Is Dad still working on tires?

Well it will soon be time to eat, so I'll have to quit.  Almost all of our food is canned, and isn't going so good with my stomach. I skip about one meal everyday. We don't have too much appetite in this heat anyhow.

I have been trying to number letters, so you can keep them straight. Hope you numbering yours too, although it isn't too important. I am going to try to write regularly now.

Love
Fred

P.S. I am enclosing a jap dime, hope you get it
