Saturday Eve.

Fort Ord, Calif.
Dearest Sister,
Just a couple of lines to say that I am still in the good old U.S.A. This California is a wonderful state, but it is the rainy season here right now. I wish you could visit this place. The towns are beautiful. They are almost all of Spanish design, and very neat and clean. The people are nice too. They treat us pretty good.
I am taking some more training here -- and it is rugged. I just spent 48 hours up in the mountains where the peaks are covered with snow. It rained the whole time; so I ate, slept, and marched in rain -- and cold rain too. We ate nothing but 'K' rations, which is mostly dog biscuits. What a life -- phooey! I am getting some special jungle training, malaria control, beach landing etc. -- very good, but also very tough on a man.
But I do like to go to the different towns that are nearby. Tomorrow my 2 buddies and I are going to 'Carmel.' This is a millionaire and movie star's town -- whoopie! There is a lovely beach -- and the darn fools swim even when it's cold. Some pretty girls. A wonderful U.S.O. We are going to take some pictures, and just walk along the beach.
I hope everyone is ok. Write when you get time. Say hello to Clyde (wish he was here) and Ray.
Love
Fred
