Dear Mom:
Well, here I go again, trying to write a letter when I haven't had any mails for ten days. And there's really nothing new to write about. I envy people who can write letters.
I guess we heard the news of the war's end in Germany as soon as anybody. But there was no wild rejoicing down here. We all seemed to have a sigh of relief—now maybe we can really go to work on the yellow rats. I hope the people back there don't get the feeling that it's all over but the shouting! I guess I'm just a pessimist.
I have been darn good food lately, and I think I have gained a few pounds. It's going to be tough to go back on "C" rations. I'll bet food will be getting scarce back there soon. That's when your pantry will shine! By the way, if you have Spam there, eat it before I get home! I have had enough of it to last me a life-time. Also, powdered eggs, dehydrated potatoes.
It's very hot here, making it hard to even write letters! I guess I am lazy. All the war news seems good. But don't under estimate the Japs. Our war isn't over. It makes me mad to hear some of those news broadcasters!
As usual, I am waiting on my mail again. I am about a week behind again. How about some pictures of the place, and you and Dad? May is a nice month up there. And I never did have any pictures of you and Dad. No alibis please.
Last night I saw a movie. In a newsreel I saw - guess who? -- myself. It was taken during a landing operation. Lots of us get a kick out of seeing ourselves there. The movies always remind me of how far away from home I really am.
How is the weather there? Is there going to be a good fruit crop? It is still very hot here; with the rains getting closer every day. The mosquitoes sure do work on me too. Never a dull moment, hey?
I have read several magazines lately. They all talk about the changes in the returning soldiers. Nuts!!! All most of us want is to come to things the way we left them. I wish I had some of those writers over here. Another thing I hear too much about the wonderful work the Guerrillas have done. Nuts!, again. There's sure a lot of wasted sympathy on the Filipinos.
It looks like all I can do is gripe, so I better quit writing. I hope you are all o.k. How Dad's old truck holding out?? Like the old Chev!
Love
